What is AEO, and why Cache Valley businesses should care

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) in plain English: how to get your Logan or Cache Valley business named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI, and why being early matters.

More of your customers are starting their search by asking an AI. They open ChatGPT or Perplexity, or they Google something and read the AI summary at the top, and they ask: “who’s the best roofer in Logan?” or “a good bookkeeper near me in Cache Valley?” The AI gives them a name or two. If it’s not yours, you don’t exist to that customer.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your business named in those answers. It’s the next step beyond traditional SEO.

SEO vs. AEO, simply

  • SEO gets you to show up in the list of blue links on Google.
  • AEO gets you cited inside the answer: the name the AI actually says before anyone clicks anything.

They’re not opposites. You need both. AEO is built on the same foundation as good SEO; it just adds the structure and signals that AI models use to decide whose name to give.

Is this real yet, or hype?

Both, honestly. Today, AI search drives a small slice of most local businesses’ traffic, so anyone telling you to drop everything for AEO is overselling. But it’s growing fast, and here’s the thing that matters locally: no one in Cache Valley is doing this yet. Being early on a channel before your competitors notice it is exactly when it’s cheap to win.

What AEO actually involves

  1. Find out where you stand. Do ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI mention you today? Who do they name instead?
  2. Structure your content the way these models read it. Clear answers to real questions, well-organized pages, and entity signals about who you are and what you do.
  3. Structured data (schema). The behind-the-scenes markup that tells both Google and the answer engines exactly what your business is, where, and for whom.
  4. Keep doing the SEO too. The pages that get cited by AI are usually the same well-built, trustworthy pages that rank well on Google.

The Cache Valley opportunity

A locally-rooted business that gets this right now can be the name AI assistants give for its category in the valley, before the competition even knows the game changed.
